I'm realizing more and more that using social media well - responsibly - takes intentionallity. With no plan, the interwebs will eat your time for dinner.

NEW POST: Here's to the steady decrease of Michael and Debi Pearl's influence... [Discussion raging]

Yesterday I tweeted, updated, and posted the fact that the anonymous administrator for the Facebook page for “To Train Up a Child” by Michael and Debi Pearl had had a change of heart and were taking down the page.  Their initial intent was to leave the notice up for 24 hours to get out the message in the status update above, and then shut down the page.

I have read “To Train Up a Child.”  It is absolutely heart-breaking.  I believe it has literally been a tool in the hands of the devil, in the guise of a “Godly” model, to abuse and withhold love from children.  I understand that I am using strong language.  But I cannot remember a book in the past few years that has elicited such a powerfully negative response in me.  I believe that the Pearls have done incalculable harm to children, to families, and to the reputation of God.

I know families who have used the methods found in “To Train Up a Child.”  Some children of this methodology are well adjusted, spiritually healthy young men and women.  It can happen.  But I believe it can happen largely IN SPITE OF this book.  It is sinister and cultish and dangerous.

Usually I avoid finger pointing in my writing.  I may be in error here, and I welcome feedback.  But in the case of the Pearls, I will gladly and publically ben a voice of opposition, for the great name of my Lord Jesus and the reputation of His church.  And because I believe this methodology is cruel and abusive to children.  In this case, I will say what I believe in the hope that some of you reading will steer clear of the Pearl’s teaching.

There is currently a fascinating, painful, but important discussion raging on this Facebook page.  I think it will be taken down soon.  In the mean time, it may be worth your while to read some of the running commentary.  Not all of it is God-honoring, for sure.  People’s ugliness is on display.  But if you have had any thoughts as parents about using “To Train Up a Child” in your own family, it may give you a broader perspective.
